Reception at the Embassy of Greece in Vienna – Celebrating the Greek National Day

On 24 March 2023, the Embassy of Greece in Vienna hosted a distinguished reception to commemorate the Greek National Day. The 25th of March 1821 marks the beginning of the Greek War of Independence against Ottoman rule, which led to the establishment of a modern democratic state in 1830.

The event gathered diplomatic representatives from various embassies in Vienna, officials of the Federal Chancellery, local authorities, and members of the Greek diaspora who actively promote Greek culture and heritage in Austria. The Greek newspaper Kathimerini described the event as “a form of modern cultural diplomacy.”. The evening included the
national anthems of Greece and Austria, performed by the acclaimed baritone Aris Argyris, accompanied by Anastasios Strikos on piano.

The Embassy of Greece in Vienna is housed in an elegant Baroque-style residence, influenced by the Historicism movement. Built between 1886 and 1889 by a student of the renowned Danish architect Theophil von Hansen, the building reflects both architectural grandeur and cultural continuity, making it a fitting venue for such a diplomatic
celebration.
